Bibles and the pens to write in them
The interleaved journaling Bible puts a blank page across from every page of Scripture. Crossway modeled it on the Bible Jonathan Edwards had bound with blank pages between the printed ones, where he wrote more than 5,000 notes. The trade-off for all that paper is small type: the Bible text is 7.5 point.
Micron pens use pigment ink instead of dye, and pigment dries on the surface of the paper instead of soaking in, so less of it shows through thin Bible pages. The finest tips, 005, 01 and 02, are the sizes for margin notes.
The Heirloom line is Crossway's top-end Bible. The Gloria Dei is single column with wide margins, bound in goatskin and Smyth-sewn by Royal Jongbloed in the Netherlands, and the leather runs out past the pages on every side (a "full yapp") to protect them. It's backordered right now, with Crossway expecting more on October 22.
Studying it
Jen Wilkin's Women of the Word is subtitled How to Study the Bible with Both Our Hearts and Our Minds. The second edition has the same text with study questions added at the end of each chapter, so it works for a group.
Her Revelation study from Lifeway Women goes through the book verse by verse over nine weeks, with a code inside for ten video teaching sessions. The gift set adds a CSB Scripture Notebook: the text of Revelation on one side and lined pages on the other.
The Bible Recap started in 2019 as a podcast that walks listeners through a 365-day chronological reading plan. The book version came out in 2020 and has sold more than a million copies.
Praying it
The Valley of Vision is a collection of Puritan prayers gathered and edited by Arthur Bennett, an English minister who studied the Puritans. Banner of Truth published it in 1975. It sold fewer than 20,000 copies in the U.S. in its first twenty years and is past 337,000 worldwide now. The title comes from Isaiah 22:1: "The burden of the valley of vision."
Every Moment Holy, by Douglas McKelvey, is a book of more than 100 written prayers it calls liturgies, most of them for ordinary days: a sick day, the first snow, the loss of electricity, laundering, and one for those facing the slow loss of memory. Ned Bustard illustrated it.
Dwell is an audio Bible app. It has more than 20 narrators and 14 translations, including the KJV, ESV, CSB and NIV, plus optional background music and a repeat button for memorizing a passage. A one-year gift comes as an email card you can schedule for a certain day.
For the grandkids
The Jesus Storybook Bible has 21 Old Testament and 23 New Testament stories, and each one is written to point ahead or back to Jesus. That's where the subtitle comes from: "Every Story Whispers His Name." Sally Lloyd-Jones wrote it, Jago illustrated it, and Zonderkidz published it in 2007. It's sold more than five million copies.
Places to go
Sight & Sound started in 1964, when Glenn Eshelman, a Pennsylvania dairy farmer, put on a show of his scenery photographs at a local church with a slide projector, a record player and a microphone. It's now two theaters putting on Bible stories, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Branson, Missouri. Miracle of Christmas runs in Branson from November 3 to December 31, with live animals, including the wise men's camels, and adult tickets from $59 to $79.
The Museum of the Bible is in Washington, DC. You go in through the Gutenberg Gates: 40 feet tall, made of 118 brass panels, with the opening lines of Genesis in Latin as printed in a Gutenberg Bible. The Grand Hall is free; the exhibit floors need a general admission ticket.
A gift in her name
Samaritan's Purse puts out a Christmas Gift Catalog where you pay for something a family overseas needs. A nanny goat gives about a liter of milk a day. Smaller gifts start at $10 for a Bible for a family. Give it in her honor, and they'll send her a card saying so: printed cards need to be ordered by December 13, and e-cards go out the same day.
In conclusion
The list above copies straight into a new WishPoster list with the Nativity theme. Or start one from scratch and let her fill it in.
